Jewelry Trends Through The Decades

Jewelry has been around for a long time and it has evolved through the years. In the past, ancient people wore jewelry made of feathers, bones, shells, and colored pebbles. Many types of jewelry items still being used today actually begin as functional objects. Pins and brooches were used as clasps to hold clothing together while rings and pendants were used for early seals and identification, rank, and authority.

The history of jewelry goes way back to 25,000 years ago, but today let us take a look at how the trends of jewelry have change over the past 50 years.

1970s – In the 1970s, women loved wearing jewelry to make bold statements. They were not afraid about being too flamboyant or vibrant with their choices. Plastic was often used to create elaborate pieces. Celebrities during this time would wear mixed materials including gold, beads, large golden earrings, and diamante jewelry. Coloured quartz and coral inspired by cultural influences were also popular.

1980s – In the 1980s, women were all about big hair, mixing and matching their jewelry to make bold statements such as the ‘punk rock style’. Celebrities during this time would go out in faux pearls, oversized necklaces, earrings, and brooches, made with gold and lighter cheaper materials.

1990s – In the 1990s, the punk rock choker styles reached a peak. Celebrities would arrive at awards shows in body jewelry, silver pieces, plastic creations and subdued colours inspired by alternative rock music. For instance, David Beckham inspired men to embrace jewelry like necklaces and engagement rings.

2000s – In the 2000s, women enjoyed bold jewelry including large hoop earrings, layered chain necklaces, personalised jewelry, and chokers, which remained popular. Celebrities during this time, would wear diamonds, rhinestones, cuffs, plastics, and wood - a 'Boho-chic' type of look. Hip hop music heavily influenced jewelry trends and celebrities would wear pieces inspired by Africa and the Middle East.

2010s – In the 2010s, jewelry trends were diverse and non-restrictive. Celebrities are becoming increasingly innovative and experimental with their looks and often wear bold embellishments, platinum, coloured and bright gemstones. Jewelry for men were also booming, with male only jewelry collections from prestigious designers on the rise.
